For years I thought that the only way I could be successful was if I worked hard and paid my dues. I found myself bending over backwards to serve the agencies I worked for overwhelming and exhausting myself.

About 10 years ago I graduated with a master’s degree in art therapy. As I neared graduation I began looking in the newspapers for job opportunities. Needless to say, there were none in the small town I lived in. In fact most people I talked with had never heard of art therapy. I was bewildered. I had an extensive education, had attended a prestigious school (NYU), had gotten stellar grades, and was up to my elbows in debt. The only jobs I could find were agency jobs earning peanuts. There I was making $18,000 a year with an advanced degree. I was exhausted, frustrated, and just plain overwhelmed! I sought out many others who had worked in the field to find out what they were doing and how they did it, looking for a magical map that would lead me in the right direction. Without much luck I piecemealed together consulting programs and offered many free educational programs hoping to increase my oh so meager wages. Putting it politely, I was STRESSED OUT!

The last straw came when I was working for an agency that provided little support and training. Two weeks into the job, without a cell phone or name badge I found myself sitting in the crisis unit at 11:00pm for the second time in one week. I sat in the waiting room with a 10 year-old client, waiting for him to be admitted to the psychiatric program. This was the same client I had brought in the week prior, and was told by my agency he would have to fail out of all options before he got the desperate care he needed. We sat together sewing a pillow in the waiting room. As they admitted him he gave me the pillow. He couldn’t take it into the unit and he asked me to keep it safe until he got out. My heart was broken. I could not bear to watch HEPLESSLY as the SYSTEM FAILED A CHILD again and again. I vowed that night to be the change I desired in others. Now, let’s fast forward to my life today . . .

Today, my life is a totally transformed! I have a booming business helping children, adults, and families’ tap into their creative resources to solve the problems in the lives. I get to work with fantastic individuals who desire to make changes in their lives while making a fantastic living. Now I get paid extraordinarily well, better than my therapist friends, for helping people reshape their lives. I get calls and thank you notes from my clients telling me how the skills I have taught their children have changed their behaviors, made their families happier, and transformed their lives! I get to do this while making oodles of money and having more fun and free time than ever before!
