Help, I just don’t know where to start!

November 23rd, 2009
Help, I just don’t know where to start! Ever feel that way? Ever feel like you have a bunch of ideas for your therapy business but you don’t know where to start? Or perhaps you need some clients ASAP and you just don’t know what actions to take? It is overwhelming and confusing. You may start doing a bunch of things inconsistently and seeing little results, or you start for a bit, then give up because it is too difficult, or maybe you don’t start at all.
If you have ever felt confused about where to begin in the process of attracting clients, then these four steps are for you!
1. Write down everything that you are doing or developing in your business related to attracting clients. This would include what’s on your “to do” list (i.e. calling referral resources, developing new brochures, developing a signature talk, tweaking your website). OK- now take a minute and really acknowledge all you are trying to do. Sometimes just writing it all down puts it into perspective. When I do this I feel a big release (like a mental exhale), looking at all I have on my plate allows me to acknowledge how busy I am, and validates my feelings.
2. Organize- At this point many business owners become confused, because they just don’t know which task to do first. Here’s a simple rule to help you make decisions- choose the task that will give you the biggest ROI (return on investment). Meaning choose the one that will make you money. Still confused? Pick the task that’s the easiest and will provide you an opportunity to get more clients quickly. Circle it on your list and focus on doing it to completion.
3. Let go of perfection and “busy work”- Most people in business get stuck here. They believe that they have to have a website, brochures, cards, etc all in place before they begin doing activities that will attract clients. The problem with these actions (and beliefs) is that you are spending time, energy, and money on tasks that do not give you an immediate return. Many therapists and other business owners can easily stay distracted playing with their marking materials and lose focus on the activities that draw clients to them.
4. Remember there are only 2 things you should be doing- working with your clients and doing tasks to attract more clients. It’s a simple concept, but one that you’ll need to work at continuously to remained focused on building your business. So when you become distracted surfing the internet, or checking your emails 20 times a day, think about what activities you can be doing to stay focused on attracting clients. If you are unsure, refer back to what you circled in step two.

Are You Ready to Play Bigger?

November 16th, 2009

I’m spending this morning putting my finishing touches on my presentation for the American Art Therapy Conference in Dallas this week. I can’t wait to share all the insider strategies in my conference workshop on creating a successful art therapy business.

I have to share with you a BIG success one of the Professional Creative Solutions Certification students achieved within three months of receiving her certification.

Here’s what she said about the program:

“This program has been very beneficial in teaching me to identify my own feelings, tap into my intuition, trust my inner guidance, and recognize self-limiting patterns. It has given me an opportunity to witness the power of art to promote self awareness and to heal emotional issues. I believe that I have grown both personally and in relation to a broader context interpersonally. Laura has been an amazingly insightful guide in this process.”

Not only did she gain great insight and specific tools, but she learned how to apply the information she acquired so she could share it with others. This student has created the first healing art series for The Sophia Institute! If you haven’t heard of The Sophia Institute it is where National presenters such as Marianne Williamson, Joan Borysenko, Jean Houston, and Rick Brown (Imago Relationship Therapy) have presented.

WOW! Now that’s pretty remarkable!!!

If you are looking to create action this BIG in your life and in the lives of the people you work with then the Profession Creative Solutions Certification program is right for you!

Here is the link

We can’t wait to help you create amazing and inspiring transformation in your life for 2010!

Heart Selling: How to get clients saying “Yes, your services are exactly what I need!”

November 10th, 2009

Even been in a situation where you are sharing what you do and how much it costs with a potential client and you feel so in-congruent and inauthentic? If so, you may be struggling with selling. For those of us who are healers and helpers we are often VERY uncomfortable with sales conversations. We love what we do, but feel it is inauthentic to talk about fees. Many of us have chosen this profession to help others, yet at times we have sacrificed our own financial well being because of our discomfort with having sales conversations.

There is a solution and it is more simple than you think, it’s called Heart Selling. Heart Selling is about deeply understating your potential clients problem by asking questions, active listening, and shifting your beliefs around selling so you can help many more people with your services. Ironically, it is very similar to what we do as therapists, but there is a specific system you need to follow and it’s something you need to be prepared with prior to talking with clients.

Here’s some Heart Selling steps you can take to authentically enroll your clients:

1. Shift your thinking about sales-

Sell is not a four letter word- really it’s not a bad thing at all. If you have apprehension about sales then you must start to shift your beliefs to attract more clients and be of greater service. Here’s an exercises that can help. Split a piece of paper and write down all the negative beliefs you have about sales in the left column and in the right column write down all the positive beliefs. When you start to think negatively about selling shift to the positive side (I’m able to help more people, I can share my gift, I offer a solution to their problems, etc). Keep this list handy so you can make the shifts prior to a sales conversation.

2. Are your marketing materials working-

Your marketing should be working for you so that you are attracting your ideal high paying clients to you (pull marketing) and you are pushing away those clients that are not ideal. This process allows your clients to self-select who is right for your services, which means you’ll get highly motivated clients who get outstanding results.

3. You’ve gotta have a system-

Systems work. So when you create a congruent Heart Selling template all you have to do is follow the check list and you’ll exactly what to say and do to ensure that you’ll authentically close the sale.

4. What’s your client’s biggest problem-

You must understand their problem and how it impacts their lives so you may offer a solution. When people are fearful of sales it’s because they are focusing their thoughts on their own experience, not on their potential client’s feelings and concerns. Heart Selling is about having an honest conversation to deeply understand and connect with your client and guide them on what choices they have working with you.
